Glowing red eyes can really ruin an otherwise perfect picture. Fortunately, it's fairly easy to correct. This technique works better than the guided activity in PhotoDeluxe. Follow these simple steps to remove red eye from your photos using Adobe PhotoDeluxe.
Difficulty: Average
Time Required: 5 minutes

Here's How:

  1. Turn on Advanced Menus from the lower left corner of PhotoDeluxe.
  2. Open the image you wish to correct.
  3. Zoom in on the eyes.
  4. From the View Menu, choose Show Layers.
  5. From the Layers palette, click the new layer icon. Name the layer and set the blend to Overlay. Click OK.
  6. Go to Tools > Brush.
  7. In the brushes palette, select a small, soft brush.
  8. In the brushes palette, click the color swatch, then click on the iris area of the eye to pick a foreground color. Click OK to close the color picker.
  9. Carefully paint over the red area, taking care not to go too far outside the red area.
  10. Go to Effects > Blur > Soften and set the radius around 1-2 pixels to smooth the edge of the painted area.
  11. If neccessary, use the tips below to refine the correction.
  12. When you're satisified with the results, click the arrow in the upper right corner of the layers menu and choose Merge Layers. Remember, there is no going back after this point.

Tips:

  1. Use the eraser (Tools > Eraser) before merging to clean up any stray pixels overlapping an eyelid.
  2. If all the red is not removed, duplicate the layer by dragging the layer to the new layer icon on the layers palette.
  3. If duplicating the layer makes the eyes too dark, lower the opacity of the top layer by double clicking on it in the layers palette and entering a lower number in the Opacity field.
